Gladiator

Gladiator SlotSmart game makers are not slow to pick up on a winning idea and taking our favourite blockbuster movies & TV shows and transferring them into the slot game market – it is just good sense. Playtech’s Gladiator slot is one of those games that has made a successful transition straight off the big screen and into the handy format of your mobile phone – or any of your other devices! Or your PC of course.

Where do we start with the Gladiator Slot Machine? The Playtech version of game is certainly in our All Time Top 10 Slots list- it’s up there with Thunderstruck 2 from Microgaming and IGT’s Star Trek Slot Machine.

And this homage to the multi-award winning director, Ridley Scott’s Roman epic, which can be played at Bet365 Casino, isn’t the only game that falls into a very welcome genre. If you love that winter is coming then you can take a twirl on the Game of Thrones video slot, or if you just love to scare yourself then there’s The Mummy slot to send you into the zone of supernatural adventure, or take it all the way and take your gaming out of this world with the Age of the Gods range.

But as someone who loved the Gladiator movie, I wanted to take a go on the slot game of the same title to test whether Playtech have shaken their slot game wand and created something that is in keeping the big screen inspiration and had enough extras to make for an entertaining slot game.

Look and feel

So how does this puppy look? Well the answer is, pretty darn good. Gladiator slot has borrowed heavily from the movie in the looks department with more than just photos of the main characters gracing the reels.
The background to the reels is the colosseum where historically the gladiatorial battles took place. Other than this the set-up is pretty unremarkable except for the graphics borrowed from the big screen which are good.
The movie fans amongst you will be gratified that tiny excerpts of the feature come to life from time to time on the reels and that’s pretty advanced stuff.

The soundtrack, as you’d expect, echoes the vibe of the film and it hits a sombre note which works well with the film clips when they pop up, luring you into the action. Some of the electronic bleeps and pings don’t work quite so well but it’s the standard fare of slots and not anything to drive you nuts or distract from the reel spin!

Gameplay

Gladiator is a 5 reels, 3 rows and 25 pay lines battle for cash where you can come out on top without even donning your armour!

What could be better than to make a buck with a few familiar faces? The main characters from the film make up the valuable icons of play.

Top of the tree is the creepy Emperor Commodus (acted by Joaquim Phoenix), followed by his sister the beautiful Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), the white bearded political opponent Gracchus (Derek Jacobi) and then a fellow slave and friend, Juba (Djimon Hounsou) and then Proximo (acted by the hell raising actor Oliver Reed, who famously died during the film being made, forcing the studio to make a high tech hologram of his final scene to disguise his absence).

The lower value icons of play are the Ace through 9 of the card deck made out in fancy golden lettering.
The one blooper of the game for me was that Russel Crowe doesn’t make an appearance – unlike his co-stars. Instead we have the metal mask worn by Maximus, the movie’s hero played by Russ as the game’s Wild. The Wild substitutes for all icons, except the Scatter. The game’s Scatter is the towering Colosseum building in Rome where the battles took place.

The Scatters are the key to triggering the bonus fun.

To get the Colosseum Bonus in play just land three or more Colosseum Scatters and enter a picking game where you literally choose stones from the famous building.

There are four rows of stones to choose from. Each layer holds different treats with the first row containing free games. The second is better still, with freebie games with multipliers up for grabs. Row three gifts you extras Scatters and row four delivers too with extra Wilds there for the taking. For once that wicked Emperor Commodus is on our side, if you can land him during the free spins mode on the middle reel, then he uncharacteristically gifts you a further three free spins! Who says he’s just a homicidal maniac!

The others include juicy multipliers, free games, additional Scatters to up the ante and even more Wilds to add to the reels and make you winning combos.

There is also a second feature, those Playtech dudes and dudettes sure like to keep us busy! This time land the Wild on the middle three reels and enter the Gladiator Bonus!

Once again a picking game is the order of the day with a selection of nine gladiator helmets in gold, silver and bronze to choose from. And better still, you get a generous 9 picks with some good prizes to reveal including a brain-sizzling x 45 multiplier! Frankly that’s enough to make me a slave to the bonus bonanza!

If the extras in the game aren’t quite enough of a lure to you there is also a Gamble mode where after any win you can stake your winnings on the colour of an unturned card, you might be in luck and double your winnings or you might crash and burn ending the featuring and wiping out your dosh.

Gladiator Jackpot

Look out for the Gladiator Jackpot slot- a version of the same game which is linked to a progressive jackpot that often ticks up over $1,000,000. Remember, you will be making a small contribution to the winning pool every time you bet on this version of the game.

That’s not going to worry you if you scoop the big one of course! The casinos we recommend here feature both version of the game- standard and progressive jackpot linked.

Conclusion

Playtech’s Gladiator slot is a Roman romp of a slot game with all the pizazz and authentic movie elements to make this a great slot for fans or just fans of the historic slot genre. When the wins come in they are on the generous side thanks in part to those handy extra Wilds and Scatters that are up for the taking during the Colosseum Bonus. With the interactive elements of the movie, the slick styling and strangely generous Commodus on the reels there is a real scope for coming up trumps in this game that still feels fresh and fun.

Simply a fantastic slot: this game was a trailblazer. There are games that match this slot, but we find ourselves drifting back to this game time and time again.
